The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

This psychedelic wonder is a fantastical morality tale set in the present day. Dr Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) entertains with his travelling show, ‘The Imaginarium’. By choosing to enter the imaginarium, audience members can enter in order to choose between light and joy, or darkness and gloom. Dr Parnassus is an elderly man blessed with the gift of controlling the imaginations of others, but is also cursed with a dark secret…

Long in the past, he made a bet with The Devil (played by Tom Waits) in which he won immortality. He met his true love with whom he had his daughter Valentina. However there was a catch; upon granting Parnassus his wish of trading his immortality for youth, The Devil intends to come back and collect Valentina when she turns 16. With his wife now past on and his daughter coming of age, Dr Parnassus has to protect her from her impending fate.

When The Devil comes calling, he renegotiates the deal with the Dr and wagers that whoever can collect the first 5 souls wins. In this extravagant race against time, Parnassus enlists numerous weird and wonderful characters who he promises will have Valentina’s hand in marriage if they succeed. A never ending landscape of surreal and mind-boggling scenarios ensue, compelling you to be drawn into the magical world of the imaginarium.

Visually spectacular and completely unpredictable, The Imaginarium of Dr. Panassus is the last film to feature the late actor Heath Ledger. His character Tony, who morphs each time he enters the imaginarium, is also played by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.

With Terry Gilliam at the helm, it’s no surprise that such a magnificent piece of cinema can be created. Other famous works under his belt are ‘Fear and Loathing Las Vegas’, ‘Brazil’, and the cult-classic, ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’. Ni.
