This graphic novel written by Robert Venditti explores a future where humans live their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates, good-looking and physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It is a perfect world – no crime, pain or fear.

However, when the genius student who invented the human counterparts is murdered, the utopian world is left drastically shaken. FBI agent Greer (Bruce Willis) is sent in to investigate and soon uncovers a huge conspiracy behind the Surrogate phenomenon. As the case grows more complicated, the introverted detective is forced to venture out into the real world himself after his own Surrogate is attacked and risk his life to find the killer.
